A striking addition to your concert! "Canoe Song" - A favorite North American tune is creatively arranged incorporating unison and 2-part harmony, round and partner-style singing with original music. With recorders and percussion, the songs are blended together to form a partner song at the conclusion of the piece. "Songs of the Earth" - This choral pairs two venerable Native American songs: a Hopi chant and a traditional Arapaho Native song. Students from the commissioning choir wrote poetry, which the composer incorporated into this setting. The text was shaped from a ritual song of the Pawnee nation which revered the eagle for its strength and wisdom. "Eagle Hill" - Young voices will soar like the eagle in this accessible work for treble choir. Movement five, "Pleasant It Looked" (Winnebago), features a soprano soloist (imitating a boy soprano) and is a quiet meditation. Movement four, "Love Song" (Nahuatl), in alternating 8/8 and 9/8 is a lyrical, rhapsodic setting of a ravishing text. Movement three "War Song" (Sioux), is a vigorous piece with canonic imitation and some tone clustering, starting with a single voice parts and expanding to full SSAATTBB texture.
Movement two, "As My Eyes Search" (Chippewa), is energized by close canonic entries.
